ROCKHAMPTON trainer Jared Wehlow paid $51,000 for a Spill The Beans colt which topped today’s record-breaking Capricornia Yearling Sale.
Lot 33 (pictured courtesy of Matt Harris), a bay or brown colt by first season sire Spill The Beans out of the Falvelon mare Falvesa, was offered on account of Aquis Farm and that operation will retain a share in the yearling to be trained by Wehlow.
“Hopefully the Spill The Beans progeny go like the Better Than Readys and Spirit of Booms,” Wehlow said after the hammer fell.
“This yearling has probably got a little bit of growing to do but he was the one we came here to buy.
“I probably paid a bit more than I thought I’d have to but he’s just a nice horse and he’s going to be raced in partnership with Aquis Farm who are retaining a share.
“This might be the first one that’s raced up here with their colours on.”
Today’s auction at Rockhampton Showgrounds saw 83 of the 109 lots sell for a gross of $1,031,250 with an average price of $12,425 and a clearance rate of 79.05%.
Capricornia Yearling Sale convenor Jeff Leaver said it was great to crack the $1 million mark in what he believed was a record sale.
“It was a really good result and I think it will improve by the time more of the passed-in lots are sold following the sale,” he said.
“I believe it’s a record for us and there were some nice types of horses sold here today which will be great for Rockhampton racing going forward.”
Leaver said the sale, which is now being managed and promoted by the Rockhampton Jockey Club under a three-year agreement, had gained momentum and more southern buyers had realised it was a good sale to come to.
“When I’ve talked to everybody who’s had a good time at this year’s Carnival I think it’s popularity will only grow,” he said.
