JUSTIN Stanley had only ridden for trainer Ben Currie once before today’s victory in the Capricornia Yearling Sale 2YO Classic with Good Humour.

The filly (pictured courtesy of Matt Harris) was a late pick up for the hoop who had originally been booked to ride Tom Button’s Pound For Pound who didn’t make the race due to soundness issues in the week leading up to the juvenile feature.

Good Humour (Squamosa – Funny As) defeated Craig Smith’s Hezhome (Better Than Ready – The Duchess) by three-quarters of a length with Tony Gollan’s Pull Anchor (Husson (ARG) – Mel’s Pocket) in third in the $125,000 CQ Equipment & SMW Group Capricornia Yearling Sale 2YO Classic.

“I’ve only had one ride for Ben before – it wasn’t one of my best rides, sort of a victim of circumstances – and this was the first time I’d sat on this filly (Good Humour),” Stanley said after the win.

“We were in the gates for a long time and she never moved a muscle, very professional.

“She’s only had one start before in a 1050m race at Toowoomba and Ben said to me before the race just keep that in the back of my mind that it was her first start over 1200m up this long (Rocky) straight.

“But on what she did today you’d think she’d get further. She was very impressive.”

Stanley, who knocks up riding winners all over Queensland, said winning the 2YO Classic was special for him.

“This rates right up there. I’ve been trying for a few years and run thereabouts a few times with my good mates Bill Reid and Matt Tremble and I was a very unlucky second last year on Diamond Account for John Wigginton which should have won.

“It was good to go one better and make amends for last year.”

Good Humour was sold for $10,500 by Tullyard, Boodua, at last year’s Capricornia Yearling Sale and she collected upwards of $85,000 from today’s win.

Currie was not on course at Callaghan Park today but no doubt he savoured the win from afar.

After two big back-to-back days of racing in Rockhampton attention now turns to the Capricornia Yearling Sale tomorrow from 11am at Rockhampton Showgrounds.
