EIGHT races to launch the 2019 Capricornia Yearling Sale Carnival and the Rockhampton Jockey Club’s Darryn Nufer previews the meeting.
Race 1 – Black Saga has bumped into a couple of handy two-year-olds at his two starts in Red Satin and Hezhome who have both won multiple races and the booking of apprentice Quayde Krogh who has spent his recent time in Sydney with the Waterhouse-Bott operation is a significant lead. Tales Of Epsilon had one start in his first prep (beaten a fair way by a sharp one in Arnwood) but it’s what he has shown in a couple of trials that suggests there is some ability there. Drawn to get a good run which could be crucial and may represent each-way value. You have to respect what the Better Than Readys are doing on the track and Nobody Better has good lead-up form for this. Another who is drawn well. Throwing in She’s Whittiepredominantly on spec. Will be huge odds but Tom Bourke has a great record when he travels them here so could be one to include in multiples.
SELECTIONS: Black Saga; Tales Of Epsilon; Nobody Better; She’s Whittie.
Race 2 – Numerous first-starters engaged to complicate matters but of the raced brigade liked the run of Whipped Cream here recently who should be hard to beat off that. Not Liable will be better for the debut outing here recently and expecting to see improvement. Stable going well at present too. Garnett Taylor’s Bold Expectations ran second on debut and just has to overcome the wide alley to be in the finish. Dutch Rocket ran okay in a trial behind Tales Of Epsilon so worth including if the latter does something in race 1.
SELECTIONS: Whipped Cream; Not Liable; Bold Expectations; Dutch Rocket.
Race 3 – Looks a race for the former Victorian Poster Man. If he can’t win this he may not ever win a maiden here. Just can’t leave out Dossier for the form duo Wehlow and Wiggins. Seriously, how well is this bloke Wiggins riding at the moment?! Love’s Best Hope turned in an improved effort last time and a repeat sees her competitive. Military Prince is a “gunna” and he’s running out of chances to do it.
SELECTIONS: Poster Man; Dossier; Love’s Best Hope; Military Prince.
Race 4 – Thinking the connections of Bold Zip would be disappointed if he doesn’t go close to winning this. That man Wiggins on. King Alfonso gets in well after the 3kg claim and Butterworth stable knows how to bring them here to win. Spirit’s Silk should get a good run from the draw and claim sees her in well. Kings County has taken a while but might be ready to win now.
SELECTIONS: Bold Zip; King Alfonso; Spirit’s Silk; Kings County.
Race 5 – Race looks to set up well for Static Lift who is surely due to win one after a couple of second placings on the trot. Daunting Queen is an in-form mare but not sure she’s as well in as the top pick. Van Winkel has been racing in great heart of late and can’t knock. Colorado River is capable.
SELECTIONS: Static Lift; Daunting Queen; Van Winkel; Colorado River.
Race 6 – Astral Odyssey has always shown ability and can give this a shake if he puts his best foot forward. Fields Avenue will need luck from the wide alley but Justin Stanley on to offset that. Probably can’t sell Edinglassie Flyer short coming off a 3.3 length maiden win at Mackay on debut but this is obviously tougher. Jellybean could be an improver.
SELECTIONS: Astral Odyssey; Fields Avenue; Edinglassie Flyer; Jellybean.
Race 7 – Great to see a big field here for the Country Cup. Thought Ruby Ray got in well here at the weights and third-up off two good runs prior could be the each-way value. Should get a good run from the draw and Matthew McGillivray a positive booking. Our Beatnik has to lump a fair weight but is a last start winner and should follow the rail from gate one. Archie’s Son defeated Mustarrid last start and carries 10kg less than him here. Still think Mustarrid can run a race despite having to lump the 64kg.
SELECTIONS: Ruby Ray; Our Beatnik; Archie’s Son; Mustarrid.
Race 8 – Drumbeat’s Choice won here last start and winning form is good form. Ditto with Poetic Heartwho blew away his opposition here last time. Age doesn’t seem to weary Fastnet Flyer whose form of late has been good. Uthred can be running on late.
SELECTIONS: Drumbeat’s Choice; Poetic Heart; Fastnet Flyer; Uthred.
